How do we understand and relate to ‘the built environment’?

As the fixed solidity of the bricks and mortar (or glass and concrete) of our architectural heritage?

Through the rational and formal representations of architects’ and planners’ drawings and models?

Or through a more dynamic and fluid interaction that includes the experiences, patterns of behaviour, memories, beliefs, and aspirations of the people who ‘build’ it?

Can critical spatial practices be used to foster these fluid and dynamic interactions, engendering new approaches towards the built environment that are inclusive, imaginative and productively unresolved?
