Donna Rutherford

Donna Rutherford sings Unfortunate Rake after a
version by Sara Grey.

‘It’s a song I sing quite a lot.
[...] thinking about the pianola
and the sound of that and also
the space and the history of the
space. Obviously, it’s a woman
singing about another century
and a kind of lifestyle. Although
it was in the States. But I
suppose it’s quite personal. I
hope I don’t end up completely
down that path! [laughs]. [The
song]’s changed. The recording
I heard was by a woman called
Sara Grey who’s an American
who tracks how songs move on
and change from Scotland and
Ireland across to the States,
and the influences on them.
The song was originally about
cowboys and about men, but
she’s singing it from the female
point of view.'
