  The installation was designed to
encourage visitors to engage
with the multiple histories of
the old music hall, embedded in
the everyday objects that have
been found in the building - while
making reference to the Britannia
Panopticon’s previous function as
a shoe warehouse. The artefacts
are normally displayed in museum
cases, or behind glass.

150 of the 600 boxes contained
artefacts - including a baby’s
dummy, a fragment of celluloid,
a whelk shell and an empty
matchbox - excavated from under
the floor boards by the Britannia
Panopticon Trust volunteers.

  Visitors were also invited to
write their own histories
through leaving something
in one of the remaining 450
empty boxes.
